After all these years, we still consider the Apple TV to be one of the best streaming devices money can buy. It’s a reliable, time-tested gateway to all your streaming services, plus you can do more with it, like play games, FaceTime, access music streaming services, and more, without taking out your phone, tablet. The computer or PC is connected to other devices. your TV.
Control this wonderful device in the palm of your hand with the Apple Remote (aka Siri Remote, aka One Remote (the last one we made)). But even powerful devices can have trouble pairing or staying connected. Luckily, this guide will show you how to pair an Apple Remote with your Apple TV and how to use an alternative to the included device.
The remote that comes with Apple TV 4K (including 2021 2nd generation models and new 3rd generation 2022 models) has two names: Siri Remote for Siri-enabled regions and Siri Remote for Siri-enabled regions. The original remote that came with Apple TV 4K models has a white ring around the menu button. If you buy a new Apple TV 4K from Apple or a second-generation Apple TV 4K (now discontinued) from a third-party vendor, you’ll get a new silver Siri Remote.

3rd and 2nd generation Apple TVs ship with the same silver Apple Remote (note the name change). The original Apple TV bundle came with a clunky white remote, also known as the Apple Remote.
If your Apple TV won’t turn on when you press the Menu or Home button on your remote, make sure the remote doesn’t need to be charged. There is no battery level indicator on the remote itself, so you may have missed the low battery pop-up message on your Apple TV screen.
The Apple remote uses the annoying Lightning to USB-A cable (or, for 3rd generation Apple TV 4K owners, the Lightning to USB-C cable) – hopefully if you upgrade to an iPhone from USB-C. Whatever you have, leave it plugged in with the wall charger for at least 30 minutes, then try turning your Apple TV back on with the remote.
Remember, you can always check the remote’s battery level in your Apple TV settings by doing the following:
Step 3: Select “Remote”, you can see the actual battery percentage. Make sure it has enough battery to work.
Step 4. Connect the remote again. Check if there is power on your Apple TV. The small white LED on the front panel should light up. If not, unplug the power cord, wait six seconds, and then plug it back in. You should now see a bright white LED.

The previous generation remote control for Apple TV HD is almost identical to the one that came with fourth generation Apple 4K TVs. Again, the only notable difference is that it doesn’t have the white ring around the menu button. However, the instructions for pairing the remote are exactly the same.
The third-generation Apple TV comes with an aluminum Apple Remote and a non-rechargeable coin cell battery. If your pairing steps are not successful and the battery message keeps showing that the battery is low, try replacing the battery.
Step 1: Flip the remote. Use a coin to turn the battery cover counterclockwise until it opens. Remove the old battery.
Step 2: Place the new battery in the battery compartment with the printed side (positive side) facing up. Replace compartment cover.
The small white LED on the front panel should light up. If not, unplug the power cord, wait six seconds, and then plug it back in. You should now see a bright white LED.
Make sure your TV is turned on, set to the correct HDMI port, and showing the Apple TV home screen.
Step 4: Point the remote at your Apple TV, then press and hold the Menu + Left buttons for six seconds. A confirmation message should appear on the screen stating that the connection to the remote control has been deleted.
You should see a confirmation message on the screen that the remote is connected. If you don’t and your Apple TV still doesn’t respond to button presses on the remote, continue to the next step.
Again, if none of these steps help, your Apple remote may be faulty. You can order online or purchase a new one at an Apple Retail Store.
The second generation Apple TV uses the same silver Apple Remote as the third generation Apple TV. Follow the same instructions as above.
The original Apple TV came with a large white plastic Apple remote. As you can see above, the play/pause buttons are inside the D-pad and the menu buttons are below them. The process for removing and adding this remote is the same as for the second and third generation aluminum remotes.
If you lose the remote or it breaks down, you can always use the default Apple TV remote in Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (so you don’t have to find a new remote). The company added this feature in iOS 11, but didn’t stop using the Apple Remote app until the end of 2020. To access these controls, follow these steps:
Step 1: Swipe down from the top right corner where the LTE, Wi-Fi, and battery icons are located. Click the remote access icon displayed in the Control Center.
Step 2: When the Apple TV remote opens on the screen, make sure your Apple TV is listed at the top of the list. If you have multiple models, click the current model in the list and select the target device from the drop-down menu. Remember that all devices must be connected to the same local network.
Step 3: If this is your first time using the Apple Remote, follow the instructions and enter the four-digit passcode provided to pair your Apple TV with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
